Donkey Kong Country Review

Donkey Kong Country helped define the SNES over a decade ago, when it was first released. Though a play through nowadays is less amazing than it was as a wide-eyed child, it still stands as a fantastic platformer and one of the best Super NES games around.

The Graphics are amazing, even today. The lush environments create a fantastic backdrop for the revolutionary 3D models of DK and his enemies, who's animation is smooth and detail is amazing. These kinds graphics were in their infancy at the time - look at games like Starfox to see the difference.

One of the best features of Donkey Kong Country is, without a doubt, its music. From the slow, jazzy beats of Jungle Hi-jinks to the epic theme of the final boss, it gives the perfect mood to the game. It really couldn't be better.

The gameplay is solid, with a wide variety of attacks and items. Though they can be somewhat sloppy at times, which is only worsened by the Wii controllers, but the game itself it very well done. The bosses get somewhat boring, being only palette swaps of earlier ones, but in the long run, it provides a unique experience in each level. The tag-team mechanic of Donkey and Diddy Kong is simple but brilliant. You can go through the game with either - there's no point that you NEED to us one of them, but the difference is apparent after only minutes of play.

It has next to no story, and is little more than an excuse to run around and beat up small fuzzy animals with a gorilla in a tie, but I'll be damned it it's not fantastic. A must buy for any Wii owner.
